Boating Advice

Doesnt the idea of a lovely three day sail in wonderful old boat sound nice? Here are a few things to think about before you sail away.

1. Do check the price. It may be possible to take an actual, fairly luxurious cruise instead of sailing on one of the oldest boats in America.

2. Do make sure you fully understand the size of your "room " on the boat. If you are hoping to have any romantic action in your cabin it would be good to know ahead of time that you and your partner each have a small bunk and these bunks are not on the same wall.

3. Do know ahead of time if you and your partner can both even stand up at the same time in your "room" on the boat. If the answer is "no" consider other options.

4. Don't leave without checking more than once to make sure you have Your luggage. Even though you carefully packed All the luggage, did Yours actually make it to the boat? If not you will have a fantastic time with no changes of clothing and nothing warmer than a sweatshirt. Dont leave without all your luggage!

5. Dont get on a boat where the crew is planning on having a lot of assistance from you and the rest of the paying customers. Like, for instance, doing your own dishes or pulling in ropes and such.

6. Dont think you will get everything outlined in the brochure. Will you ever go onto land during this excursion or will you just ride around and around on the boat being quite sure youve seen that same shoreline five times in three days. Do ask the boat crew if you will ever see any of the sea creatures promised and what about the island lobster bake?

7. Dont plan on real bathroom facilities and do ask where the shower is. Ha!!

8. Dont even think of taking this kind of boat trip if you dont like small spaces. Not only is the berth area minuscule, there is no other place to play games or cards except the galley, also tiny and often being used to fix the meals.

9. Do consider this boat trip if you enjoy working while on a very expensive vacation in the smallest accommodations imaginable while possibly seeing no sea life and not eating promised lobster!

These are some dos and dont of a boat trip Ive actually taken, you learn from experience, especially where boating's concerned.

For sailors cruising along national and international coastlines, prepping ones sailboat is essential for enjoying the perfect vacation. Although outfitting a sailboat with the proper sailboat parts is extremely important, it is also important to equip sailors with efficient navigation tools and safety gear.

Venturing out on the sea for an extended period of time offers both adventures and risks. However, with the proper equipment, some of these risks can be avoided. Specifically, charting a course for ones journey may be difficult if the sailor is new to the region. With this said, modern navigation technology is becoming increasingly available for all sailors to utilize.

Aside from popular boat GPS units, improvements in navigation software for PCs have become another favorite in the latest navigation technology. Particularly, Maptech offers software such as the Chart Navigator Pro that promises to be easy to use and clear. Its special features include: new GPS planning and navigation software, best cartography, complete coverage on all U.S. coastal areas and major rivers, free chart updates and weather forecasts. Knowing the right course and direction for ones sailboat is imperative in both safely steering the vessel and reaping all the fun benefits from the sailing vacation.

Although it may be frightening to even conjure up the idea of needing to abandon ones sailboat, a sailor must be prepared for all emergency situations. For these situations, safety and survival gear such as lifejackets and buoys are required for all sailing vessels. Other sailboat safety gear include: first aid kits, fire extinguishers, safety harnesses, and Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon (EPIRB). For instance, ACR Electronics produces EPIRBs that are guaranteed to ensure your safety when overboard your sailboat. By transmitting a sailor's GPS position and identifier to SARSAT satellites, this took works as an internal GPS receiver and immediately notifies search and rescue (SAR) forces. Special features include: FastACQTM GPS engine, 100 m GPS position accuracy, provides a GPS acquisition test, a full functional self test of internal circuitry, and battery voltage test, and automatically activates when out of bracket and in the water or can be manually activated. Both safety hardware for sailing (e.g. lifejackets) and technological devices facilitate in aiding a sailors survival.

It is very crucial for sailors and their families to be ready for their sailing excursion by not only practicing caution but also by possessing the appropriate sailing tools. A sailor and his or her family can fully enjoy long vacations out on the sea with the proper navigation equipment and safety gear.

Unlike sailing classes, sailing instructions do not come from a qualified sailing instructor. On a cruise ship, it is the Captains orders received from the owner of the ship. In the case of yachting sailing instructions is the term used to define a set of rules governing the conditions for competition in a sailing competition or Regatta. It gives the crew of the yacht precise instructions of where and when to go somewhere, the insignias and flags that will be used, how to register for the competition, and even where and how to protest a ruling by the governing body.

Sailing instructions usually come in printed form so that the content cannot be edited without the knowledge of all the competitors. Once it is printed and distributed, it will take a committee meeting or competitors meeting to decide and announce any changes to be made. Even the process of changing or editing the contents of the sailing instructions have to be included in the sailing instructions itself. Everything that will affect the competition must be included in there from disposing of trash in the ocean to the use of radios and safety regulations and even how violators will be sanctioned.

A sailing instruction has to be precise in order for the race to be a success. Competitors are under strict instructions to follow these rules and there can only be one interpretation. If there are several ways to interpret a ruling on a sailing instruction chaos will follow and there will also be several winners following several disqualifications and different rulings.

Effective and rapid knot tying as part of your sailboat voyage planning is a very important skill set to learn and to practice continually until it becomes automatic - which knot to select for any given task and then be able to tie it quickly. It is a fascinating subject and you will find that you will become obsessed with being able to tie all kinds of nautical knots easily and fast.

As suggested in a previous blog I recommend that you purchase a suitable length (say 1.5metres) of soft braided rope, 6 to 8mm. diameter and set it up on the back rail of a chair, towel rail or bed end so it is in position permanently. Every time you go past, grab the rope and tie a knot or two. This way, you will soon find you can tie several basic knots very quickly.

The other day I came across this informative little kit on knot tying. It consists of a manual and a dvd showing how to tie a wide range of knots. The clarity is excellent and the step by step process on the dvd makes it very simple to follow.

The 180 minute dvd takes it all to a higher level again with visual step by step demonstrations in slow motion, so you can easily follow and have time to make adjustments as you go. A simple click on your mouse stops the frame whilst you check you are tying correctly before proceeding to the next step. The bowline, which is the knot you are just about most likely to use more than any other knot is shown very simply. This knot you need to practice from all angles as you need to be able to tie it quickly, sometimes in pressure situations, for example throwing a line around a pile or cleat on a wharf/jetty/marina berth as you are approaching, especially in a breeze or wind. Your window of opportunity in these situations may be only a few seconds, particularly if there is no one on the dock to help you. So you need to be able to throw the line around smartly and secure your vessel immediately.

Once your yacht is secure fore and aft, then you can go about confidently and comfortably adjusting all of your lines to make your boat snug and secure.

With practice, from this manual, you will be able to carry out this procedure in ten seconds flat or even less! don't believe me? then set up your line on the back of a chair and practice till you can. You will find you can get to twenty seconds quite easily, then fifteen seconds. It will take a little longer to pare off that last five seconds to get down to ten, but with a little time and patience, you will.

The kit goes on showing you how to tie the Fishermans Bend, Clove Hitch, Rolling Hitch and Sheet Bend. Many other knots are included and then it moves onto lashings, whippings and splicing

Once you have caught the bug, you will want to go on and learn all of these knots. The author, Egmont Friedl has been tying knots since he was a lad and runs many seminars on this subject. You can visit him on his website http://www.emf-marine.de and learn much more on this fascinating and essential subject for cruising sailboat sailors.

When you have really caught the bug you can scout around for the all time doyen book of knot tying 'Ashley's Book of Knots'. This is a six hundred page volume first published way back in 1944. I have a wonderful mint 1957 edition at home which sits in pride of place amongst my sailing books. A search over time in Old and Antique bookstores should eventually unearth one.

You can read much more about tying up to strange jetties and poles whilst cruising in far away places in my ebook 'Voyage of the Little Ship 'Tere Moana'downloadable from my website http://www.sailboat2adventure.com

Sailboats come in all different shapes and sizes to accommodate multiple functions and purposes from racing to daysailing and cruising. Whether a sailor is seeking the thrill of an exciting regatta or looking for some recreational relaxation out on the water, a sailboat must be properly equipped for all sailing adventures.

Since the art of sailing requires the sailor to harness the wind to control the boats speed and direction, certain sailboat parts become critical. Specifically, the rig must be correctly outfitted and tuned, including sails, booms, lines and blocks, as well as standing and running rigging.

Sailing lines, including both rope and steel cable, are used on a sailboat and its sails for both stationary and movable purposes. Lines that serve the latter purpose are referred to as a sailboats running rigging, which controls the actions of the sails. These movable lines are mostly composed of halyards, downhauls (also called cunninghams), and sheets which raise the sails, strike the sails, and adjust the sails, respectively. With every adjustment of the sails, another important component of sail shape management is sailing blocks. Sailing blocks are pulleys that are used in conjunction with lines to direct the shape of the sails. A system of the appropriate blocks for individual sailing purposes is necessary for smooth sailing. Blocks also provide leverage for sailors to adjust sails against the great pressure the wind can place on sails, particularly during heavier winds. A reliable set of blocks are valuable for all sailing adventures.

Known for their sailboat hardware and accessories, Harken offers a comprehensive selection of all types of blocks including single, double, triple, cheek, and snatch blocks. Harken is known for producing stong, durable, compact, and low friction blocks. These blocks come complete with special features including sheave and sideplates UV-stabilized with carbon-black additive for maximum protection and free-rolling Delrin ball bearings. Catering to numerous needs, Harken blocks are specialized to be used for cunninghams/outhauls, vangs, traveler controls, barberhaulers, flag halyards, leech cords, lead car return tackles, and more.

A sailor can smoothly set sail for a calm get-away or chase their competitors in an enthralling race with the appropriate sailboat parts.

Boating equipment can be a wide and diverse subject. When you take up the sport of boating, the amount of boat equipment, boat supplies, boat parts, and boating accessories you need is as complicated or as simple as you want to make it. But the basic boating equipment that everyone needs includes a boat, life jackets, and a trailer if you want to take it to the water.

You have to have a boat in order to participate in the sport of boating. If you want to take your boat to different waterways you will need a trailer. Its essential that you match your boat trailer to your boat. This will depend on the size of your boat mainly, but there are other considerations to be thought about as well.

What is the size of the vehicle you will be using to tow your boat on the trailer? There are some lighter weight trailer models that can accommodate vehicles with less horsepower. Ideally, youll want a four-wheel drive truck that can handle both the boat and the trailer easily. But if you just have a small truck, look into a lightweight aluminum trailer that is easily towed by a smaller truck.

The type of boat you choose is also dependent on your vehicle. Most people choose their vehicle first and then their boat. If all you have is a smaller truck with little horsepower, you wont want a 30 foot power boat traveling behind you. Handling will be difficult, and you run the risk of harming others on the roadway if you dont pay attention to this big detail.

So, youve got your boat and youve got your trailer, what other type of boating equipment will you need in your boating adventures? Your boat must be outfitted with a life jacket for every person aboard, fire extinguishers, some type of sound emitting device (your mother-in-law doesnt count), and adequate lighting for night boating.

Two other essential pieces of boating equipment would include a two way or VHF radio, as well as some type of navigation device like a GPS system. When you are on the water, you dont want to risk becoming stranded and not having any way of communicating with the outside world or being able to find your way back to shore.

If you will be participating in water sports, the boating equipment will differ from pleasure cruising. For water sports, youll need a tow rope and some skis or an inner tube for tubing.

The type of boating equipment, boat supplies, or boat accessories you need will really depend on how youre going to be using your boat. Decide for yourself whats important to you and then go buy your boating equipment, but be sure you have the basics as outlined above!

There are many different kinds of boating accessories to outfit a boat with whether it is to make it look better or perform better. The most important boat accessories though are safety items, which ensure safer voyages for everyone.

Life jackets and life rafts are vital boating accessories to have even if you are not traveling far. No matter what happens on the water the chance of something going wrong and having to leave the boat is a possibility every person who steps on a boat should be prepared for.

Boating accessories such as lifejackets can be used whenever the passengers of the boat need to be in the water. Even if you are an expert swimmer lifejackets are a needed boat accessories considering you could be miles from shore or caught in a current carrying you away from land. It's important to have different sizes of lifejackets for children and adults. Obviously an adult life jacket will not fit a child properly and this can be very dangerous should the child end up in the water.

Flares are important boating accessories to carry on a boat. You never know when something could go wrong with the boat and letting others know there is a problem by firing a flare will bring help. Even if there is nothing wrong with the boat there are many other possibilities when using a flare is useful.

Flares are boating accessories to be used when you need to signal somebody for any reason whatsoever. Along the lines of flares for boating accessories for safety, flare guns can also be used to send a distress signal. Once the flare has been ignited, and seen, help will soon be on its way.

Sometimes boats are far away from anything and if something happens where you need help marine radios are important boating accessories to have. Radios can be life savers as they can call ports, other boats, or even the coast guard in case of an emergency.

Being able to communicate in any way with others is needed on a boat as many times the boat is far from any help. Radios can bring help so they are considered very important boating accessories for safety.

Boating can be an exciting and relaxing way to spend time on the water. Being in the open water, or even close to shore, many things can go wrong whether it be with the boat or with a person on the boat. Preparing for the worst is the safest way to go and by using good quality boating accessories, and boat equipment for this purpose it will ensure all safety issues are covered. Taking precautions and using the correct safety boat accessories can make the experience that much more enjoyable.

You can find all your safety boating accessories at http://www.boatersmarinesupply.com/

Imagine that you're floating out in the open on a calm refreshing body of water, the soft waves gently lapping at your hull. Could anything be more calming? Perhaps only the ease of conscience which accompanies the feeling of readiness that got you here in the beginning.

Equipment for your Safety
To assure that your boating excursions are safe, enjoyable, and without avoidable problems, there are several important steps you should follow. Keeping your boat in top condition (that is, "ship shape" in boater jargon) is doing far more than keeping it looking good. Safety is the number one to keep in mind at all times while out on the water. Fortunately, there are now many boating products, marine electronics, and boat equipment that make your boat look great AND keep you and your passengers safe.

With regards to boat trailers for example, a standard trailer winch helps with bringing the boat out of the water and onto the trailer. You can use an electric winch to make loading and transporting your boat a breeze. These winches run off your car's battery but are also safer than using a manual winch. Additionally, trailing the boat with trailer tie-down straps and a boat cover can help prevent costly or unsightly damage from wayward road debris.

If you're going to be boating, there's a good chance that you'll have to tie up to a dock at some point. Even the gentlest pond will rise and fall, and so will your boat - right into the dock! To protect your outer finish from rubbing the rough wood of the docking platform, there are boat fenders you can use to cushion it. You'll need a few high grade lines to moor the boat correctly and to help put it back onto its trailer.

Communicate While on Your Boat
Sailing the open water using just sails or a motor may be thrilling, yet being sure to stay within reach of the shore and the other members of your group may just save your life if things take a turn for the worse. Marine GPS systems, which are popular and can help you if your Marine radio communication equipment malfunctions.

It is essential that you have several gas cans on board in case you should stay on the water longer than you anticipated. Another option you should consider is a convertible top to protect you in the event of a sudden storm. This item will keep your guests and boat free of excess water.

You need to include boat equipment for communication with land and would-be rescuers, boat http://www.boatersmarinesupply.com/safety equipment and transport for your boat. However, all equipment selections need to take your type of craft into consideration. A boat used mostly for fishing will have, by far, much different 'needs' than one used for skiing.

In order to determine what equipment you will need for your boat, you must first determine what its primary function will be.

One can attribute the popularity of fly fishing to its exposure in media. Television shows and programs have either featured fishing or have had programs that mainly focused on fishing. Nevertheless, fly fishing magazines have been a great contributor into the explosion of fishing.

These magazines have made believers into self described urbanites and city folk who long to experience the rugged and natural outdoors, albeit even just for a weekend. Images and descriptions detailed in a fishing magazine entice the imagination of its readers, who wait for time off to go and join this outdoor adventure. Tips and instructional guides have added more members in the fishing community.

Technology has also aided in the expansion of fishing to the mainstream as rods have become lighter and more durable. Proof of the popularity of the sport lies in the increase of advertising pages in fly fishing magazines. More and more resorts that are catered to affluent and high end markets are making their presence felt through print.

The Kodiak Legends Lodge in Alaska is an example of a resort that has benefited from fishing magazines. Pictures of the fishing grounds and the scenic view have added more inquiries from potential clients there.

Want to fish in a place where there are hardly any people, try the Buffalo Creek Ranch in Rand, Colorado where there are only 15 people residing in the town of Rand itself, and the ranch has a scenery and scope of 25 square miles. Want to be able to fish in one of the best known tail fisheries in the country and have your catch served with fusion cuisine influences of French or Asian taste, then go to the Snake River in Idaho and stay in the South Fork Lodge in Swan Valley.

Reputed to be one of the best dry fishing locations in the world, its facilities and amenities will definitely exceed your expectations added to the guide service provided by South Fork Outfitters and Henry Fork Anglers. The South Fork Lodge has all the bells and whistles of a luxurious holiday as well. Accommodations include lodge rooms, cabin rooms and the river house which has a full kitchen, large living room and an outdoor hot tub aside from a pool table and a large screen TV. Eat your breakfast at the main patio and enjoy the view of the Snake River.

These places were all featured in fly fishing magazines and many since have gone and visited their place. Fishing magazines are here to stay, now on print and online form as well.
